A TYPICAL SIX-YEAR GRADUATE PROGRAM IN THE DEPARTMENT OF ROMANCE STUDIES The Graduate Program in the Department of Romance Studies comprises 18 courses, up to 4 of which not included in the offerings of the primary field of the student may be taken in related fields in the Department (Italian, Portuguese...) or in other Departments (Art History, History, Philosophy, etc.) or Programs (Literature, Medieval and Renaissance, Linguistics, etc.). We strongly recommend that during the first year courses be selected from the course offerings in the primary field in the Department of Romance Studies. Transfer students arriving with an MA will have fewer courses to complete and therefore a slightly different calendar (with fewer courses outside the department in the related field and no requirement to take the independent study for preparation of the research paper). The requirement for the second language must be met before the student takes the PhDDE exam.
